BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

A mother accused of leaving her 2-year-old daughter alone in her car for at least five hours Friday is set to appear in court Sept. 2.

Police said 22-year-old Kelsey James was at the City Sports Grill in Bristol and did not know about the child until she woke up in the hospital.

They said the child was found sleeping in her car seat around 5 a.m., alone in a dark parking lot. Her mother was allegedly so drunk that she passed out at the bar and forgot the baby was there.

"Barely talking, barely walking," said Courtney Lausier, City Sports server. "You could clearly tell she was intoxicated."

Servers said around 11 p.m. Friday they actually refused to serve her alcohol. At one point, they said she ran into the parking lot and tried breaking into someone else's car. That's when police were called.

Around midnight, officers said they found James passed out at the bar and they took her to the hospital.

She woke up around 5 a.m. and that's when things got worse, according to police. James started asking for her child.

They found the 2-year-old in the back seat of a car in the bar parking lot.

The Department of Children and Families immediately took the child into protective custody. Eyewitness News has learned that she's now staying with a family member.

"The fact that she drove here. I don't even know how she drove here," Lausier said. "It amazes me because her eyes were barely open."

James was released on a $50,000 bond.
