TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The John Tyler High School "Big Blue Band" is carrying on a fairly new tradition.

Band members hit the streets Saturday for a march-a-thon neighborhood parade. More than 140 students marched three different parade routes.

“We're going, zigzagging up and down hills and stuff like that, so we're probably [walking] close to 10 miles today,” said band director Larry Wade.

Wade says it's an opportunity for students to raise money and showcase their talents.

“We get a lot of support from the community throughout the year. They support us going to the games and different events. So, this is an opportunity for us to give back to them… to come into the neighborhoods and play because it's not every day you have the band be able to come to your front yard and perform,” said Wade.

He says it will also prepare them for the upcoming school year.

“This is a fun time, but it's also a workout for us too. We're getting used to the heat, just getting in shape and stuff,” he said.

Parent volunteers marched with the students along their parade route to collect donations. Families who donated were treated to a special performance in their front yard. All the money raised will go to providing water and supplies at future performances.
