EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Residents in three East Texas communities will soon be losing some medical treatment options.

East Texas Medical Center announced today that hospitals in Gilmer, Clarksville, and Mount Vernon have been underutilized, and as a result, will ETMC will cutback some services.

ETMC announced it would terminate the hospital lease in Mount Vernon effective January 1, 2015. In Gilmer, ETMC will stop inpatient care on January 1, but will keep an emergency department and support services. ETMC Clarksville's lease was not renewed, but that facility still has 21 months on its current lease.

A public health official said hospitals are facing a tough decision when it comes to staying open in lower population areas.

"It's a very expensive system, and if you don't have the volume, if you don't have the proper payer mix, that is, if you don't have enough people who can pay the tab to take care of the people who can't pay the tab, then you cannot be successful," NET Health CEO George Roberts said.

Roberts said hospital closings are becoming a trend around the country for the same reason ETMC is closing or reducing services at these facilities.
