Major increase in Smith County car thefts

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The summer months bring car thieves, according to recent statistics in the Smith County area.

Car theft has increased by 40 percent this season. The average number of stolen cars from December 2013 to June 2014 was about 15 per month. From July 1 to August 20 there were 45 stolen cars.

Officials said they haven't seen a connection in the thefts but the majority of the people who had their cars stolen also left their cars unlocked.

"And with these hot months people do tend to leave their windows rolled down and start the car and let the air conditioner start going while they run into the grocery store or something. Those are all ways you're just opening yourself up to auto theft," said Krista Caulkins, with the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said it just takes a few seconds to become a victim of auto theft.
