Lee One Step Away From State

In 2002 the Red Raiders advanced to the state semifinals, only to lose to Midland 24-14. In 2003 it was a heartbreaking triple overtime loss to The Woodlands in the quarterfinals. Fast forward to 2004... The quarterfinals are now behind them and a state championship berth is once again within reach, but this time, the Red Raiders feel it's their turn.

"The thing about his team is everybody comes to work everyday," said Lee quarterback Josh Hill, "and everybody is focused and everybody wants just one thing, and that's to win state."

"They take everything in stride," said  Lee head coach Mike Owens.  "They don't get real excited about winning. They don't hang their head when bad things happen so I think they're a little more focused maybe and intent. They're worried about one thing at a time and not what's going to happen next week, they don't worry about that. They just just play for the moment and that's what they need to do."

The Red Raiders rely heavily on their speed and experience on defense. But, several key pieces of that defense were missing when they lost to Euless Trinity in week three. Those players are now back and ready to play.

"It was tough to sit there and watch our team lose," said Lee linebacker Warren DeHaven.  "Me, Cole (Scates) and Jason (Stripling) were sitting beside each other and saying I wish we could be out there to help our team out. This week, it'll be exciting 'cause we get a chance to avenge the loss."

"We're ready to go and try to make it farther than ever," said Lee offensive lineman Brian Culp, "We want to be the first team. Everybody is focused. We think we can do it."

Lee's semifinal game versus Euless Trinity is Saturday night at 6:00 at Texas Stadium.
