Man arrested, charged with murder after death of father

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A man is dead and his son is in the Smith County Jail after the man's body was found in the a home in northeastern Smith County.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a home in the 3700 block of Jackson Avenue at 1:48 a.m. on Monday morning after receiving a call about an unresponsive man. When they arrived, they found R. L. Britton, 56, of Tyler, dead in the laundry room of the residence. Sheriff's officials determined that Britton was the victim of a homicide.

Deputies arrested 28-year-old Randall Britton in connection with the 56-year-old's death. Neighbors say that Randall is R.L.'s son. Randall Britton has been charged with murder and is being held in the Smith County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

Neighbors of R.L. Britton said they were shocked this morning when the Smith County Sheriff's Department told them of Britton's death.

"You would have never seen this coming, neighbor Kinikki March said. "It's shocking everybody."

Britton, who was described as the neighborhood handy-man and someone who would always listen.

"He was just a real nice guy," neighbor Deepa Mauldin said. "Anything you needed done, you just call on him."

Smith County Jail records indicate Randall Lamont Britton has been arrested three times this year including assault involving bodily injury to a family member.

March said she recently started seeing Randall around the neighborhood.

"I don't know how long he's been living here, but I talked to him about a day ago, over in my yard," March said.

Another neighbor, said she has only seen Randall from a distance, but did not suspect anything when she saw him last night.

"I never said anything to him, just waive at him when I see him sitting out there in the yard," Catherine Brown said.

    A Troup man is behind bars this morning after he allegedly sexually assaulted a child. Micah Gage Shelburn, 19, is currently in the Smith County Jail on charges of sexual assault of a child as well as kidnapping charges. KLTV reached out to the Arp Police Department.
