LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas man well-known for his voice of reason and advocacy of social change has passed away.

Reverend Herb Spady, a longtime advocate of racial equality and unity in Longview, passed away yesterday morning. The soft spoken one-time chaplain of the Longview Lobo football team dedicated much of his life to young people and keeping them drug-free.

"He was part of a group of people in the community who wanted to see our community do better and that believed that prayer is the most important key to making our community better. He leaves behind an example that other people can take up that same passion," says friend Pastor Lamar Jones.

Funeral services for Spady are being arranged at Craig funeral home in Longview.
