New head coach David Collins gives Pine Tree reason to believe

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It’s no secret, Pine Tree is not used to having success on Friday nights. The Pirates haven’t had a winning season since 1998, but new head coach David Collins gives the program hope.  "In the past, we haven’t been very good, we haven’t had any winning you seasons you know, but I feel different with coach Collins here,"running back Quay Ward said.

The former Lake Travis offensive coordinator brings a winning mentality and a businesslike approach. "I think the  main difference is just how detailed everything is and how more complex everything is, senior quarterback Mason Hays said. "I think that will make us know a whole lot more and we will be a lot smarter football players." Ward added, "You have to be with it, he doesn't’t play."

There is no walking or standing around at Pine Tree’s practice. Its go, go, go and tempo, tempo, tempo. "Its like what they are doing in college now just quick reps, fast reps," Hays said. "We have the music playing and everything like that. It’s a whole lot more fun." Coach Collins added, "We live our life at a two minute pace and what we want to do is we want to be comfortable in an uncomfortable setting."

Collins could not have handpicked a better quarterback in Hays to run his up-tempo scheme. He racked up over 1,200 all purpose yards last year and 16 touchdowns. Better yet, he’s a born leader. "He brings all of our guys together and he does an incredible job of making sure guys are where they are suppose to be all time, doing what they are suppose to do and it makes my job easier," Collins said.

Quay added, "We expect so much out of each other and the whole team. So I definitely think this year is going to be different."
