Events Center Issue Won't Go To Voters In February

Gregg County commissioners postponed a bond election that would have raised money for an events center. The election was set for February 5th. The center is still in the works, but commissioners say there are too many unanswered questions, including the size of the $28 million center.

The events center will be built on 100 acres of land off Cotton Street in Longview. It will sit adjacent to the Maude Cobb Activity Center and include an equestrian site and larger convention center.

Judge Bill Stoudt says commissioners don't want to raise taxes. "I think that it's very clear in the court by a unanimous decision today that we need to make sure that every (i) is dotted and every (t) crossed and that we have clearer public input, without anymore tax increases."

The Commissioner's Court wants to investigate the possibility of using private investors and other ways to help pay for the events center.
