UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A four-year-old East Texas boy was killed on Sunday night after he fell underneath his family's truck, says the boy's uncle.
Kelly Mize told KLTV that he received a call around 10 p.m. on Sunday that his nephew, Ryley Johnston, was with his father at the family's residence near Gilmer in Upshur County when the accident happened.
Mize said that when he arrived at the residence, he learned that Ryley had been with his father, Brian Johnston, at the man's shop. The uncle said when Brian left, he didn't realize that Ryley was running alongside the truck. While running, Mize said Ryley slipped and fell under the tire.
"As soon as Brian realized what had happened, he picked Ryley up," said Mize. "By the time anyone got here, he had already passed."
Mize remembers Ryley as a typical four-year-old kid.
"He loved his dad," Mize said. "He loved anything that had a motor on it. He was like his dad's shadow."
Mize said the situation is a sobering experience.
"You try the best to protect your kids, but it shows anything can happen at any time," he said.
According to the uncle, the Upshur County Sheriff's Office and Department of Public Safety investigated the boy's death.
