Nacogdoches has earned some bragging rights.

The Oldest Town in Texas was recently named to “Texas Highways” magazine's “Top 40 Travel Destinations” list.

“We have been watching closely the Top 40 travel destinations countdown of Texas Highways this year,” said Melissa Sanford, the executive director of the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are thrilled to announce that Nacogdoches has been voted as number 8 in the top 40.”

The City of Nacogdoches beat out a number of other well-known Texas cities with its No. 8 ranking. Nacogdoches ranked higher than New Braunfels, Palo Duro Canyon, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Padre Island, Austin, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

“You probably learned in school that six flags have flown over Texas: French, Spanish, Lone Star, Confederate, and United States,” the Texas Highways website stated. “But when it comes to Nacogdoches, an East Texas city named for a band of the Caddo tribe that settled here around AD 1250, you can add three more, which flew in the 1800s as part of short-lived rebellions.”

The web story said that while historical sites such as Millard's the Crossing Historical Village and the Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library play important roles in drawing visitors, “antiques, restaurants, and the expansive educational gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University” do so as well.

The Texas Highways entry also pointed out that Tonkawa Springs, which is located near Nacogdoches, is one of the best natural swimming holes in Texas.
