SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A local teenager is nursing a gunshot wound behind bars, after police say he shot himself while playing around with a gun.

Officers were called to Willis Knighton North shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, where 17-year-old Julius Baker had shown up with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand. He was treated and released from the hospital, but instead of going home, he went to jail.

They say he was playing with the firearm at his home in the 2900 block of Hattie Street when he discharged the weapon, striking himself in the hand.

Detectives say the information they gathered about how Baker shot himself warrants a criminal charge of illegal use of a weapon. He was booked in to the Shreveport City jail on that charge.
