Longview ISD see signs of improvement

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - School leaders across the state are reviewing accountability ratings released today to understand how their students are performing and improving, as well as how instructors need to adjust their approach to teaching.

In Longview, Assistant Superintendent Rebecca Cooper said parents looking at these ratings should realize ratings are just one measurement tool being used.

"We've struggled for a long time, but that has really caused us to look deep at what our needs are, what our instructional interventions need to be, and where we need to go," Cooper said.

Out of the seven Longview elementary schools, five received distinction. The real success story, Cooper said, comes from Ware Elementary, which comes off the need improvement list after several years.

Cooper said at Ware and other schools, instructors are staying late and adjusting techniques to target every student's needs.

"They've also had sustained staff development where coaches come in and model instruction for teachers," Cooper said.

Three Longview Schools require improvement including Lead Academy, Forest Park Magnet, and Bramlette Elementary.

Cooper said Bramlette Elementary is in a similar position that Ware was in not long ago, so she hopes to repeat success this school year.

It's going to be very directed at that school we're going to really be looking at instructional strategies and interventions and highlighting some of the key things that helped Ware," Cooper said.

As for the schools that require improvement, Longview ISD must submit quarterly assessments to the state.
