TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Fire crews responded to an explosion at Tyler Iron and Metal on Friday afternoon, according to Tyler fire officials.

The Tyler Fire Department arrived on the scene, which is on the northwest loop, shortly before 4 p.m. By 4:35, the fire appeared to be under control and it was extinguished shortly after 5 p.m.

A witness who was dropping off metal this afternoon recalled hearing two explosions. He said the second blast was large enough to break the windshield of his truck and knock him backwards.

"Metal went flying everywhere," said Josh Pellegalle "Something was inside the pile of metal that exploded."

A representative from Tyler Iron and Metal said a fire broke out in the yard of the facility.

The facility recycles household and industrial scrap metal.
