ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - The site of a fire earlier this year in Athens that forced the evacuation of a large portion of the city has been torn down.

The remaining walls of East Texas Ag Supply along Pinkerton Street in Athens were torn down by crews Thursday. They have been cleaning up the site since the May 2014 fire at the facility, which housed ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

Cleanup crews started by blending down, or diluting, the product left behind by the fire and transporting that offsite. Thursday, crews demolished the remaining walls of the facility that stood in Athens for decades.

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, an exact cause could not be determined, however local and state officials believe that there was an electrical problem in the northwest corner of the building.

Once the site is cleared of debris, crews will enter and test the soil before the land can be used again.
