LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Longview Independent School District officials are proposing a new policy that would crack down on the use of electronic cigarettes on campuses.

According to the Texas model student handbook, e-cigarettes along with vapors and smokeless tobacco should be prohibited on campus.

Last year, there was no policy banning the use of e-cigarettes on campus. Now, the district is seeking to not only ban student use of e-cigarettes on campus but also use of the devices by faculty, staff and community members on campus and at district events.

"We have the same issues with cell phones, we have the same issues with other items as well, its another distraction that we want to take away from the learning environment and I think its something we'll go ahead and address that now as the become more popular," said Judy Clements, Assistant Superintendent Longview ISD.

The policy revisions will be presented to the school board at their next meeting Monday night.
