It was an afternoon of fun and discovery for Johnathon as we made our way through all the exhibits at the Discovery Science Center. Johnathon is a sweet child who responds well to positive attention. He usually has a smile on his face when he hears people talking in a positive manner.
"He is diagnosed with autism disorder and he's pretty non-verbal," CPS Adoption Specialist Kim Rhodes said.
Johnathon is able to meet the challenges he faces every day with a safe environment that offers him structure and routine with surroundings and activities that allow him opportunities to engage his potential to learn new things. Johnathon is reported to know about 50 - 60 sight words at this time.
"He loves puzzles. He's really good at them. It's really neat to watch. I really think there is a lot more going on inside his head then we have been able to see yet," Rhodes said.
He also likes to play with toys, especially Legos.
"He loves cars, he likes to build things, Lego, that kind of stuff," Rhodes said.
The ideal family for Jonathon will be patient, understanding, and willing to give him all the time he needs to adjust. They will allow Johnathon to gain their trust at his own pace and guide him safely along.
"One that understands autism and how to work with kids that have some developmental delays and to bring out the best in them," Rhodes said.
It is important that the family be skilled at giving him structure and routine that is loving, but firm and consistent. Johnathon longs to be in a family who'll show him the Gift of Love.
