TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tuesday afternoon's spelling bee raised thousands of dollars and included more participants than ever before.
"We had more participants, more sponsors and more people coming out to the event to celebrate with us," said Andrea Anderson, Event Chair.
Vowels, consonants and some very big words were heard flying around Green Acres' Crosswalk Conference Center today as the Literacy Council of Tyler hosted its annual corporate spelling bee.
"We actually had 17 teams which each consisted of two members so a total of 34 team members from all the different companies that participated in the corporate spelling bee," Anderson said.
After all of the teams fought hard, the team from Mentoring Minds got the big win, with the word connoisseur.
"Each team had to select their own musical, their favorite musical, we had some from Lion King, we had some from Grease of course but a variety of themes and costumes here today," Anderson said.
The Mentoring Minds team members were dressed in costumes from The Wizard of Oz, so they took home the "Spirit" award as well.
The event raised $67,000, and the money will go directly to Literacy Council students.
"This is our 23rd year we're so excited to be looking towards 24 years of doing this, this is the most successful I'm happy to say," Anderson said.
Every $500 covers tuition for one student for a whole year.
