Henrico woman scares burglar from home

A bold burglar made his way into a East Henrico house where he apparently thought no one would be waiting inside. But little did he know, he was in for a big surprise.

"It was glass everywhere - from the door all the way to the wall right here," Jay Poehler showed us.

Now he is cleaning up shattered glass after an intruder decided to pay his home a visit Monday morning. It happened on the 1900 block of Parlow Drive.

"{He} took a pretty big rock, busted it right through the window of my door," he explained.

Poehler was at work. His girlfriend Elizabeth was getting ready to hop in the shower when she heard the loud noise.

"{The burglar} got halfway in and was met halfway by my girlfriend with a firearm…She saw him and as soon as they made eye contact, he bolted," he said.

The couple believes the intruder showed up to their home using an alley right behind their house - and that's the same way he left running out of the back door after the victim pointed her gun.

"It takes all of us looking, working together, to try to bring this crime down," said Pastor Timothy Kirven of Worship & Praise Church.

The church is located just down the road from the break-in.

"The key I think, Brent, is for one entity not to do it themselves," he said.

So neighbors will unite at his church Tuesday for a National Night Out - complete with speakers, entertainment, and food - with one goal.

"To stand up against what we call community crime," Kirven said.

Like the one that finds Jay Poehler counting his blessings his girlfriend was home to scare the burglar away.

"You never think that it's going to be you but you always just want to stay prepared," he said.

Tuesday's National Night Out for the Maplewood Farms & River Bluff communities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and last until 8 p.m. There will be similar events happening everywhere. To find one close to you, contact your local police department.
