TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler officials cut the ribbon to the Fair Plaza parking garage Wednesday morning at the corner of Broadway and Elm streets.

The property was donated by the Fair family, and a statue of R.W. Fair stands next to the garage's street entrance. It was sculpted by Jim Day and Cherry Day.

Fair Plaza incorporates parts of Tyler's history, including the clock tower from the Smith County courthouse. The old Smith County Courthouse clock faces, dating back to 1909, were donated by the Smith County Historical Society, and were refurbished thanks to generous donations, city officials said.

“For nearly half a century the citizens of Tyler set their watches by the courthouse clock,” said Facility Services Supervisor Gary Smith. “And now it will be available for their grandchildren to use when they come downtown too,” he added.

Tyler's city manager Mark McDaniel said the 384 space garage is already sparking interest in the downtown area."We're already being contacted by private investors that want to invest in the buildings around the parking garage because now they've got parking," McDaniel said

McDaniel added that the garage is not yet 100 percent complete; contractors still must install elevators and hang signs.

Parking in the garage will be free until September 2nd, but expect to pay $1 per hour up to $5 per day during weekdays. Fair Plaza will be free on weekends, holidays, and during the week after 7 p.m.
