Tyler Couple Has Spent Over A Decade Volunteering With Salvation Army

It's the season of giving and on the Thanksgiving holiday many gave back to their community.
One East Texas couple has spent more than a decade providing a Thanksgiving meal to families in need.
Though they may not know their names, thousands of families in Tyler have shared many Thanksgiving dinners with Jim and Betty Plyler. For the past 15 years Jim and Betty have spent their Thanksgiving, volunteering with the Salvation Army.
"It's a really good feeling," said Jim. "The feeling that we've contributed to the happiness of some who need some encouragement."
The former TISD superintendent and first grade teacher spend part of the holiday delivering meals to those protecting and serving the community.
"They're very thankful," said Betty. "They're very appreciative. We don't have a lot of time to visit because they are still at work, but the people who are receiving the meals are always so glad to see us come in, and they're very thankful .They're away from home and this is a warm feeling that someone cares what they're doing."
When the Thanksgiving morsels are dropped off, then it's time for Betty and Jim to do a little serving of their own.
"We enjoy visiting too with the people who come in," said Jim.
"It's fun to see the people that come," said Betty. "It's rewarding to see the young people that are interested, it's wonderful to see all ages all races that are here. It just gives you a warm glow inside. The holiday is made even more special because after 58 years of marriage, they're still giving back to their community, together.
The Plylers don't just volunteer on Thanksgiving. They spend Christmas and the Fourth of July with the Salvation Army. 875 meals were served at Thursday's Thanksgiving Salvation Army lunch in Tyler.
