Brandon Weeden gets a lot of reps with Romo missing practice

OXNARD, CA (KLTV) - He's 100 percent, we are just being cautious, he hasn't taken a step back. That's been the Cowboys response to quarterback Tony Romo sitting out of training camp practices. Romo did not participate in Tuesday afternoon's full-padded workout, giving back-up Brandon Weeden plenty of reps.

Kyle Orton is gone. Tony Romo's coming off a second back surgery. That leaves Brandon Weeden  as the cowboys most important insurance policy. A former first round pick considered a bust in Cleveland, Weeden is happy to have a second chance in Dallas. "I'm headed for them," Weeden said. "There's so many good players on this offensive side on the ball as a quarterback, that's nice to have. You get that comfort level and you get guys you got confidence in so yeah it's a fresh start and I think every once in a while it's what you need."

Offensive talent was scarce around Weeden in Cleveland and he had the record to prove it. Weeden had just 5 wins in 20 starts. "Quarterbacks that don't have a lot of weapons it's tough on them," Weeden said. "I think when you come to a situation like this and your receiving core is as good as they are, our offensive lines is one of the best I've ever been around and the back field is outstanding."

Wide receiver Terrence Williams said, "One of those things whenever he's in don't take a play off because he literally throws touchdown check down so I always have to be on my toes running."

The reality is if Weeden is playing, something has gone horribly wrong. A tough adjustment for the 30 year old quarterback. "This is the first time I've had to be a back up in four years so it's different," Weeden said. "It's just a totally different mind set and if I'm asked to play we're not expected to go backwards we're expected to keep doing what we're doing. It's challenging, it's different, but I think it's something I'll adapt to and get use to."
