LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A national organization is putting together an East Texas event as a kind of therapy for America's Special Operations Elite Warriors.

It started in 2011 with a handful of soldiers, fishing. Now, the event will be called the Combat Warriors East Texas Deer Hunt.

"We had 6 combat soldiers show up for our event that we wanted to honor them and give something back. Now we'll have 16 events with over 300 soldiers," says Combat Warriors president Bill Warren.

Board members have been with men who have attended their events, and held a recent meeting with participants, planning one for East Texas.

"We do fishing and hunting and other things for the families. All of these guys are warriors, all wounded, or in hard battle," Warren says.

They've lived by the gun and seen human suffering first hand and the events give them a chance at normal life.

"Half of the guys were amputees, one a triple amputee. We did everything to accommodate them," SAYS marine corps veteran Kerry Higginbotham.

And the events have been effective. "We knew it would have a therapeutic value," says Warren.

"The hunting and fishing is basically just a vehicle. What really ends up happening is the camaraderie," Higginbotham says.

"Anytime we can sit down with a soldier it’s a privilege and I'm honored to be part of it," says board member Todd Long.

Combat Warriors is a totally volunteer organization, and 100 % of money raised goes to fund events for current and former veterans.
