East Texas and Cowboys remember Robert Newhouse

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - As a Cowboy, Robert Newhouse will be remembered most for throwing a touchdown pass in Super Bowl XII against Denver. Here in East Texas, the Longview native will always be known as a family man who didn't let fame change who is was.

At the age of 64, Longview native Robert Newhouse passed away on Tuesday night after a battle with heart disease. I was really sad, but I was happy because I knew his suffering days were over," Robert's cousin Calvin Brookins said.  "He was a fighter, he fought his illness to the very last minute."

The former Galilee High School star running back was also a fighter on the field. Newhouse had a knack for finding the end zone. "Whether it was bowling over somebody or whether it was making a quick move to go around somebody, Robert could get to the goal line," Brookins who played with Newhouse in high school said.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones added, "You couldn't look at that guy and not understand and think about the game that we play. He played it with every ounce of his heart."

Through his success in high school, at the University of Houston, and with the Cowboys, Robert never changed. "He stayed within himself you know," Calvin said. "Just being a family man, being humble. He was quiet, he never boasted about anything he did."

Calvin was often by his cousins side, including at his weeding as his best man. And the memories dont stop there. "He brought me this football, he pitched it to me," Brookins said. "He said this is something to remember me by and here I am today, Robert is gone and I looked at this football last night when I got home and said this is Robert."

And while Robert has gone up to heaven, his legacy will last forever. "He is an iconic figure for the Dallas Cowboys and East Texas, " Cowboys director of public relations Rich Dalrymple said. "We are all going to miss him, but we will never forget him."

Jackson is back for Lufkin.Jackson is back for Lufkin.

Like Longview, Lufkin is always talented. Before the Panthers begin District 12-6A action, they'll play a loaded East Texas schedule featuring the Lobos in week 1, followed by Nacogdoches and John Tyler. Normally a 7 and 4 campaign would be considered a success, but not in Panther nation. In fact, despite making the playoffs every year, Lufkin hasn't advanced past the first round since 2012.
