Potential Hanover Walmart approved despite neighbor resistance

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

Neighbors in Hanover are upset after county officials gave the go-ahead for a new development, possibly a Walmart Neighborhood Market. The Hanover Board of Supervisors approved rezoning an area near the Kings Charter neighborhood to allow a grocery store. The decision comes despite backlash from the community.

Residents are convinced another Walmart will bring more traffic and unneeded competition, to what they hope to keep a quaint neighborhood.

"That's not what we purchased when we bought a home in Kings Charter," said Jennifer Grieshaber Strahan.

Grieshaber Strahan and her husband are stationed in Germany. However, their permanent home is around the corner from where the Walmart is set to be built, along with a drive through pharmacy and gas station.

"I flew in here last night to be [at the meeting] today, because that's how important it is to me, and to my husband... that this does not go through. We do plan on having a family, and we had a vision," continued Grieshaber Strahan.

That vision isn't what Hanover County board members approved.

"None of the gas stations [in the area] have lines. We don't need more product. The only people who are going to benefit from this are the developers," added Grieshaber Strahan.

Residents expressed concern over heavy traffic and competition from the mega chain.

The potential Walmart would be built right across the street from a shopping center that already has a Food Lion.

"The entire shopping center is going to go under. And every small business in there is going to go out," said Web Stokes, another resident opposed to the project.

The developer, MVG Development, says a grocery store will bring convenience and nearly 100 permanent jobs. There are plans for extra street lanes and a traffic light.

Walmart representatives aren't confirming officially that they plan to build another store in Hanover. A Walmart spokesperson does confirm that the same developer who is applying in Hanover, is set to build two Walmart Neighborhood Markets in Henrico and Chesterfield.

Walmart is promoting smaller stores, with plans to build 270-300 neighborhood grocery stores in 2015. The Hanover grocery store is slated to open in January of 2015.
