(KLTV) -

Mark Cathey's is hoping the video of a pickup truck clipping him on a bicycle will change the way drivers act around cyclists.

The video he posted to YouTube on Thursday night already had more than 39,000 views by Friday afternoon. But people are not just watching his video, they are reaching out to him as well.

"Its gotten quite a lot of attention. I'm already getting emails from all around the world just about," Cathey said.

Cathey has been recording his rides for years: first to show people the sights along his rides, now as a safety measure.

"I've seen things happen in front of me that i've been able to get a license plate number or information," Cathey said.

For some local cyclists, Cathey's video is just confirmation of what they have feared for a long time.

"I ride quite a bit and I get buzzed almost every time I ride a bike," bike shop owner Joe Self said.

Self hopes this incident can help shed light on a growing problem.

"It can show drivers that this is what can happen if you just try to buzz a cyclist or if you're not paying attention," Self said.

Triathlete Cori Moore is taking Cathey's lead, and says buying a camera for her bicycle can help keep her safe.

"If it takes a camera to do that to keep everyone accountable then that's just what it takes," triathlete Cori Moore said
