WEST END, BAHAMAS (KLTV) - Family members of an East Texas chiropractor who went missing on a diving excursion in the Bahamas believe he was attacked by a shark. Wednesday, authorities called off the search for Doctor John Petty, a chiropractor from Longview, who disappeared on a commercial shark dive in West End last weekend.

After 64 hours, the Coast Guard suspended search operations and the Royal Bahamas Police Force is considering an investigation.

Petty's daughter said authorities determined he was involved in a shark attack based on scuba gear recovered. "This was to be just one more adventure to go along with his many others," Robin Adams said. "He had an adventurous spirit and nothing slowed him down."

An experienced diver, Petty is well-known in East Texas for many of his talents, including photography which happens to be scheduled to go on display this weekend at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts.

As memorial services are being planned, Petty's daughter Laura Miller says they are learning the impact he had on so many people. "I think we've all known he was a special man, but I don't think until this happened that we realized how special he was to so many other people."Friends of the 63-year-old are remembering Petty's sincerity and his passion for photography and mission trips.

Petty's family will share their reaction Thursday on Good Morning East Texas, starting at 4:30 a.m., followed by their full interview on Good Morning America at 7:00 on KLTV.
