LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

The Hiway 80 rescue mission is working to increase its capacity for families.“This is entirely funded by our community,” said Kate Langston, Community Connection Coordinator. The mission broke ground on their $900,000 expansion project in December, but they are still in need of $250,000 dollars to ensure that when the new facility opens in September, they are debt free.

The project includes six brand new cottages specifically for families and single women will remain in the mission’s current housing.

“We really felt we needed to do something different for families,” said Eric Burger, Executive Director, Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

One resident says she and her kids came to Hiway 80 two months ago.

“There’s a lot of shelters that do not accept children, and there has got to be a place for women who are in the situation I was coming from abuse and things like that, that they can take their children to and be safe at,” she said.

She says she’s grateful for the room she has but says with so many people sharing living spaces and bathrooms things can get crowded and a little stressful.

“We’ll have a little more room, we’ll have a little more quiet and the kids can be kids without disturbing other people,” she said.

Mission officials say they need all the help they can get to pay off these houses and give families in need a place to call home.

A welcome center, computer lab and a children's room were also included in the shelter’s expansion. Right now the shelter has 50 beds and once the expansion project is complete they will have 90.
