Kilgore Police have recently received reports regarding a telephone scam. Kilgore Police have recently received reports regarding a telephone scam.
KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

Kilgore police are warning residents of a telephone scam targeting East Texans.

Police have received reports regarding a telephone scam with a 985 area code and 439 suffix, showing up as Salt Lake City, Utah or Hammond, Louisiana on caller ID. The numbers, originating overseas, are a spoof.

The callers, using Malware to infect computers, claim to be from "Tech Support," and will know if you've been on your computer recently. The callers may even know your name.

Police say the caller will attempt to convince you that something is wrong with your system, and ask you to give them a credit card number to resolve the issue. Upon refusal, the caller may become vulgar or threatening.

If you receive a strange call, police are advising residents not to give away any personal information. If you become aware you have been targeted in such a scheme, you should have your computer serviced by an authorized technical support service and have Malware removed.
