VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Inmates relocated to three East Texas counties after their cell locks were found to be 'compromised' are now on their way back to their 'jail home.'
The inmates from Van Zandt County were moved to Henderson, Kaufman and Upshur Counties when the locks were found to be compromised May 30. Jail staff noticed an inmate in the maximum security portion of the jail was out of his six-person cell. Since the locks are used throughout the facility, inmates were moved to the different jails.
The lock manufacturer developed a fix for the problem and repairs began in early July. The repairs completed July 9, with the repaired locks passing inspection from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards on Thursday.
Inmates that were moved from the Van Zandt County Jail to the Upshur County Jail have been returned to Canton. Transport of inmates from Henderson and Kaufman Counties is expected to wrap up Friday.
The jail expects to have approximately 150 inmates in its facility when it returns to full operation and occupancy.
