TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Before the holiday weekend, dog trainers warned that on the Fourth of July or other holidays, fireworks can scare your pets and they could even run away. One East Texas dog owner says she experienced that herself.

"Usually we put him up but we totally forgot about him this year and he was gone," said Jessie Lewis.

On the Fourth of July that's how Jessie Lewis says her dog Chubby went missing. Lewis says her and her family spent the day outside barbecuing and the seven-year-old Shih Tzu was right in the mix.

"I didn't think anything of it because he was eating from this person to that person," Lewis said.

Lewis says it didn't take Chubby long to bolt once it got dark.

"When the fireworks began then he disappeared, it was almost automatic," Lewis said.

Luckily later that night her neighbor Terry Griffith spotted the dog on his drive home.

"He was out in the middle of the road and I stopped my car, convinced him to come up to the car. I grabbed him by his collar and put him in the car," Griffith said.

Griffith says Chubby didn't have tags and so he talked to neighbors to track down the owner. A dog owner himself, he says he's not surprised the dog was on the run.

"My dog is deathly afraid of fireworks, if he hears a pop he comes running to the door," Griffith said.

Lewis says they were up all night looking for Chubby and they were relieved when he was returned the next day.

"I was elated, I'm telling you, because we just had him groomed and he had his 4th of July bows in his hair. I would miss Chubby, Chubby is a great part of this family," Lewis said.

Lewis says she knows just how lucky she is.

"My neighbor's dog is still missing, my next door neighbor's dog left also," Lewis said.

Now that Chubby is home safe, Lewis hopes this will remind other pet owners to think of their dogs before they celebrate.

Lewis describes her neighbors missing dog as a black and brown female German Shepherd Chow mix. The dog’s owner Gary Newman says her name is April and she has all of her tags.

She was last seen near Farm to Market 850 in eastern Smith County.
