TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Construction on the next portion of Toll 49, known as the "Lindale Relief Route", could start earlier than expected thanks to a $55 million grant.
Toll 49 currently connects Highway 110 in Whitehouse to Interstate 20. The Lindale portion will connect Interstate 20 to Highway 69 in North Lindale.
The North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority, or NET RMA, borrowed $55 million through an equity loan to build Toll 49. Earlier this week, the Texas Transportation Commission agreed to convert that loan into grant funds. The money was set to be paid back to the Texas Transportation Commission through toll revenues. Now, NET RMA doesn't have to worry about paying off the borrowed $55 million.
Smith County Judge Joel Baker says the announcement is good news for East Texans, "It allows NET RMA to have a little breathing room with finances, so it will speed up some other projects along Toll 49. That's a really important thing for NET RMA, our region and for the citizens."
Judge Baker says there is no officials start date for the "Lindale Relief Route", but he expects construction will begin as soon as possible.
