Smith Co. defense attorneys read Declaration of Independence on courthouse steps

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Thursday, defense attorneys from across Smith County gathered on the courthouse steps in the name of independence. About a dozen members of the Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association took turns reading each paragraph of the famous document our founding fathers wrote hundreds of years ago. It's a tradition that started in Houston in 2010.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal... that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," read criminal defense attorney Jim Huggler. These readings take place in front of courthouses across the state each year, usually right before or on Independence Day.

Friday, more people will gather on the Smith County square at 9 a.m. as Open Carry Tyler hosts their second annual Open Carry March.
