EASTLAKE, OH (WOIO) -

A local couple received an unpleasant surprise when they discovered a house they owned gone without warning.

Bob and Dawna Rotert of Mentor owned a house in Eastlake that was in the process of repairs. They had all the bills and taxes up to date, but a previous tenant had wrecked the place. They had started remodeling, but the city had other plans.

In February, the City of Eastlake inspected the home and cited the owners for numerous violations. However, the violations and demolition notice were mailed to the empty house, not to the Rotert's Mentor home, where their other bills from Eastlake are delivered.

"They said, ‘Well that's a different department' so they didn't do any research to find us," said Dawna Rotert. "I mean, how do you do that?"

19 Action News sought out the Eastlake Mayor Dennis Morley on the matter. He said to speak to the city law director, who has not yet returned phone calls.

After the house was gone, Bob Rotert got a copy of the demolition order. There is no record of the demolition on the Willoughby Court website.

Bob and Dawna still have a mortgage on the house. Although it no longer exists, their debt remains.
