TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is asking for a boost in their budget for the next fiscal year.

Tuesday, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith appeared before county commissioners and said retention rates among employees are extremely low. He says, among other things, non-competitive pay, costly family benefits, and understaffing have caused many of their employees to leave for higher-paying jobs.

Sheriff Smith proposed a plan to gradually increase pay over a two- to three-year period and to offer employees better incentives.

“I want the citizens of Smith County to get the best they have to give. In doing that, we have to pay them properly where they don’t have to spend all their off time, instead of being with their family, working part-time jobs just to put food on the table,” he said.

Smith County Commissioners will vote on the fiscal year 2015 budget on August 26.
