Police: Man performed 'lewd act' watching girls in Walmart children's section

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Statesville say they have spoken to a man they say was performing a lewd act in the children's clothing section at Walmart.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at the Walmart on the 1100 block of Crossroads Drive.

A witness told officers that a man was seen standing behind display shelves in the children's clothing department performing a lewd act while watching female children.

The witness confronted the man, who quickly walked away and left the area. The witness then tried to follow the man and called 911 while alerting employees.

The man was able to get away, but the store's loss prevention department was able to retrieve video surveillance of him.

Police then released the images, which they said led to a quick identification.

Just after 8 p.m. police said they had identified the man and had spoken to him. They have not released his name or said if any charges are being filed.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Statesville Police at 704-878-3406, or Iredell Crimestoppers at 704-662-1340.

Callers can remain anonymous and a cash reward is possible.
