EF1 tornado causes damage near Liberty

LIBERTY, MO (KCTV) -

An EF1 tornado touched near Liberty knocking down trees and power lines Monday night.

The National Weather Service said the damage at Raines Road and Highway 210 located southeast of the downtown square was caused by a small twister.

The path length was about 0.75 miles and was 200 yards in width.

The tornado packed winds of 95 mph. It formed at 9:34 p.m. about three miles southeast of Liberty and lasted about two minutes.

Straight-line winds of 70 mph caused damage in Liberty.

A tornado warning was issued for parts of Jackson, Clay and Ray counties after radar indicated a tornado was near Liberty about 9:30 p.m. Monday. The warning was allowed to lapse by 10 p.m.

Clay County Emergency Management Director Eric Ramsey said he is relieved to report no one was injured.

About four to five blocks of homes in Liberty were without power near Highway 291 and Main Street. At one point, about 1,500 people were without power in Liberty.

Drivers should keep an eye out for downed trees and power lines on many roads.

Crews worked to clear tree limbs and debris away.

"It's nice helping out the city and getting the power back. We feel like we're doing a good thing," Rick Snow of Wright Tree Service said.

Frank Novich's compost and mulch business couldn't ship or receive product on Tuesday because of the power outage.

"It makes things difficult but we're trying to work around," he said.

Once the tree limbs are cleared, KCP&L will have to restring the downed power lines. The hope is to have power restored on Wednesday.
