GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Monday afternoon, 37 kids got a break from life at a shelter and experienced a little fun.

“They get to see things they’ve never seen before, they get all the love and attention that they could possibly want,” said Eric Spitz, a summer missionary.

Throughout the year, Hiway 80 Rescue Mission provides, food, shelter and other services for men, women and families in need. During the summer the Christian organization hosts Camp Rescue specifically for children, in hopes of making an impact on their lives despite their difficult situations.

“I want to lead and guide these kids in the right direction in life,” Spitz said.

That almost didn’t happen for summer missionary Spitz. At the beginning of the summer the camp was in desperate need of volunteers to help run the camp. So far, organizers say six have stepped in as summer missionaries but they could always use more help.

“There’s a lot that you want to do for these kids but there is actually only so much that you can actually do as a volunteer, you just pray for the best for them,” Spitz said.

11-year-old Jerry Bell says its his third week at the camp and so far he’s having a great summer.

“We got a lot of nice people like Ms. Eden, Ms. Erica our director,” Bell said.

Bell says of all the counselors he’s made a special connection with one in particular.

“His name is Mr. Eric and he’s my favorite counselor, he’s funny and he had ADD and I have ADHD and so we’re kind of just alike,” Bell said.

Organizers say that’s the idea, building relationships and changing lives in the process.

“I know that I’m serving my purpose I have a fulfillment everyday and a reward that is beyond money,” Spitz said.

The camp will run until August 1st. Organizers say anyone interested in volunteering can contact the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission at 903-759-8101 and ask for the volunteer coordinator. If you can't make it out this summer they are always looking for help throughout the year.
