A new report on public school construction costs released on Monday by the Texas Comptroller's office shows the cost of schools opened from 2007 to 2013. One East Texas school made the list of the most expensive middle schools in the state. The schools on the list ranged in price from $199 to $216 per square foot.

Kilgore Middle School in was the seventh-most expensive middle school in the state by cost per square foot. The school, which opened in August 2013, had a price tag of $20.6 million. That breaks down to $199 per square foot, when adjusted for inflation and regional price differences.

The analysis of construction costs showed the cost for some campuses varied by nearly $200 per square foot. The analysis also showed that there are practices school districts can implement to save tax pay dollars.

"Schools can be built efficiently and less expensively, but districts don’t always choose to do so,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said. “Our report provides taxpayers and school districts with additional information to consider when making those choices.”
