HENDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Henderson County authorities say the child that was hospitalized Thursday after he was accidentally shot by his older brother is recovering in a Dallas hospital. The shooting happened Thursday afternoon at their home on FM 59 in the Cross Roads area of rural Henderson County.

Michelle Snowden says her nephews had been home all day with their mom.

“The boys were in their daddy's bedroom. They were supposed to be cleaning the bedroom up because they had torn their daddy's clothes out of his suitcase and their mother told them to go clean up the mess. While they were in there, they got the guns out. They were playing with them and [his brother] did not know the gun was loaded when he shot it,” she said.

Snowden says even though he’s stable, she's worried about his injuries.

“It hit him in his left side [near] his chest. They said it collapsed his lung. They had to put a tube in and then they had to put a breathing tube in because they needed to give him pain medicine, but they said that he was doing [well],” she said.

She says the boy's brother, the shooter, is especially distraught.

“He keeps saying this is my fault, this is my fault, but everybody keeps telling him accidents happen,” said Snowden.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities say there is a possibility they will file charges with the Henderson County Attorney's Office for making a firearm accessible to a child.
