UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

For years, the people in one East Texas neighborhood asked for changes to a nearby intersection that they said was incredibly dangerous, and now, changes are being made.

Witnesses say they have seen dozens of major accidents where Highway 271 meets Farm to Market Road 726 in Upshur County. One wreck at that intersection changed the life of one little East Texas girl.

6-year-old Lexie Moore was paralyzed two years ago when the car she was riding in was hit at the intersection of Highway 271 and FM 726.

"She cries a lot over it. Everything changed when that happened two-and-a-half years ago; just don't know if she'll ever walk again," say Lexie's grandparents, Mike and Lisa Blalock.

Lexie misses one thing most of all.

 "Walking," she says.

For more than a decade, the problem with the intersection was vehicles trying to turn onto the highway. With blind spots and fast-moving traffic, it was a frequent scene of accidents.

"I think they should put a red light up there, and everyone around here thinks that," Lisa says.

"It's sad, the accidents, and a lot of people lost their lives there," said neighbor Brandy Williams.

Lexie’s family was among those neighbors who joined forces seven years ago. They petitioned the county to take action to make the intersection safer. They believe one thing can stop the accidents.

"I do believe they should put a red light up there; save somebody else's life," Mike says.

Just a few months ago, TxDOT started working to make the intersection safer. They say they are installing a turn lane in both directions on 271. We spoke with Upshur county TxDOT officials today who say the road improvements should be completed by the end of the year.

Lexie undergoes therapy three times a week in an effort to one day help her walk again.
