TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
"I don't thing anybody should have to work today," USA soccer fan Drew Cavender said. It's USA soccer, the World Cup, it doesn't get any better than this."
For some USA soccer fans, being able to watch the game was pretty easy. "My boss is German, and he demanded that I was at a bar or something watching the game instead of working," fan J.P. Williams said.
For others, playing hooky and avoiding the boss was a little more challenging. "I just had to tell them it was urgent, had to get off work and support my team," fan Logan Gilley said. Raymond Mills of Tyler added, "We were going to be here come hell or high water."
Buffalo Wild Wings was one of the hot spots to catch the U.S. & Germany match even though it kicked off at 11 a.m. "I pulled into the parking lot and couldn't believe the amount of people but it was high energy everybody seemed to really love it," Williams said.
Nacogdoches native and captain Clint Dempsey only adds to the excitement surrounding the U.S. team here in East Texas. "He's one of the best players on the U.S. national team from East Texas, down home," Gilley said. "Just an East Texas kid, and its great to see him representing our country." Mills added, "It very much adds to the excitement, I mean he is the voice of Texas."
Despite the loss to Germany, the U.S. is moving on to the knockout stage, giving fans hope that Clint Dempsey and company can make an even deeper run in the World Cup. "To draw with Portugal even though we should have won and you go out and only lose 1 to 0 to Germany even though they played a little soft, you know anything can happen," Williams said.
So here's to at least one more watch party when the U.S. plays in the round of 16 next Tuesday.
