An East Texas firefighter made a special gesture Wednesday to honor an East Texas wounded warrior.

Longview Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary recently ran in a Wounded Warrior half-marathon in Irving, Texas and won a medal for his age group.

At Mobberly Baptist church, Zackary gave that medal to his friend, Bosnia and Iraq war veteran John Keith, Jr., who lost his leg in action in Iraq.

Zackary says he wanted to give the medal to a true American hero.

"During his service he paid a price, and running something like a half-marathon is a temporary pain, nothing like the pain that the men and women of our military service suffer on a long-term basis," Zackary says.

"I didn't really do it for this, but I do appreciate things like this and it touches me," Keith says.

Keith retired from the army last year, and now lives in Longview.
