TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Starting in March of 2015, a new DMV rule is set to eliminate the requirement for an inspection sticker. However, you will still need to get your vehicle inspected every year. Instead of getting a sticker, your record will be sent electronically to the state. You will also receive a paper vehicle inspection report.

“When you get the inspection, they'll give you a receipt and so you need to keep that with you, just in case we have not had our records updated,” said Gary Barber, Smith County Tax-Assessor Collector.

When you go to register your vehicle, your inspection will be verified to determine if your vehicle is eligible. The transition will require every vehicle's inspection and registration to expire at the same time. In order to do this in the first year, you will be allowed to register your vehicle if the inspection is valid the day you register.

“Right now, there's confusion sometimes. Which one is expired, which one isn't? This way, you have one sticker to take care of,” said Barber.

Auto mechanic Frank Sparks says he welcomes the change.

“We won't have to scrape the stickers off. So, it'll be less of a hassle that way. We won't have to write on the back of the sticker anymore. We'll just give them a receipt to show that they have gotten an inspection,” he said.

The inspection must be done not more than 90 days prior to the date your registration expires.

There will be no savings for motorists, but officials say the State of Texas will save about $2 million in oversight and sticker costs.
