RUSK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A truck driver was treated for minor injuries and many chickens died in an 18-wheeler wreck in Rusk County Thursday morning.

Mt. Enterprise VFD Chief Deniese Case said the driver was headed south on US 259, near County Road 3201 when he lost control and overturned into a ditch.

Firefighters were on the scene for two-and-a-half hours directing traffic while Pilgrim's Pride officials picked up the chickens.

"We weren't allowed to touch them," Case said. "One woman driving by asked if she could have one of the dead ones but she couldn't."

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

One lane of traffic was closed for the majority of the time, until both southbound lanes were closed for a few minutes while they pulled the truck out of the ditch.

Case said the chickens which were still alive were cooperative and stayed in the ditch while the scene was being cleaned up.
