LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

An East Texas teenager with a passion for produce is managing his family's summer farmer's market. The charismatic 13-year-old salesman hopes to one day buy the business and operate it himself.

Blake Spradlin is spending his summer supporting East Texas farmers and selling local produce.

"Everything is local," said Spradlin. "Our watermelons are from Grapeland. We have peaches from Center. Peppers are from here in Lufkin so are our plums when we get them just around the area."

The teen entrepreneur got his enthusiasm for fruits and veggies helping on his family farm and about three years ago he got the chance to take on more responsibility.

"My parents asked me to watch the stand while they went and talked and I just got hooked on it," said Spradlin.

And when they came back Spradlin said, "Step back. I got it."

Now the produce kid runs K&B Farmer's Market under the big white tent in the Lufkin Mall parking lot every day.

"I have pretty awesome customers. They're just awesome," said Spradlin. "I just go in and say how are you doing today and ask them if they're looking for anything in particular and if they need any help just ask me and I can help them."

But Blake has bigger plans for himself and his passion for produce.

"My parents buy all the product now. I just run it. Probably by next year or the year after I'm saving all that money so that I can actually own it myself to where they don't actually have to pitch in."

Blake said it's a lot of work setting up and going through the product every day but he promises his produce is the very best.

"We also have a guarantee on all of our product. If it's bad you don't even have to bring it back and we'll replace it for you."

Blake said the price for his fruits and vegetables are better than most stores and every day there is a wide variety of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to choose from, plus things like local honey and jams, jellies, pickles and other products packaged locally.

K&B Farmer's market is open seven days a week in the parking lot at the Lufkin Mall and they accept cash, checks and credit cards.
