Funeral held for Groveton star Rodney Thomas

Posted: Updated:
He will be remembered as one of the best Texas High School running backs to ever take the field. But, Rodney Thomas was more than that.

The former Groveton star was a great man who touched so many lives according to his family, friends, and teammates. On Friday, they all came together for Thomas' funeral at the Groveton high school gym.

Its tough for some to come to grips that Rodney is actually gone, but he left his mark before leaving the world at the age of 41. Thomas wore numbers 20 and 22 and was often number one on the field. Rodney was an even friend to those who were lucky enough to know him.

"He always had the words to say, he always knew when you were in trouble and needed comfort," Rodney's teammate at Groveton Charles Cockrell said. "He meant something to everybody, and this town is in mourning not because of a football hero, but because a friend they all lost."

"I feel blessed to have played with someone like that," former Texas A&M teammate Clif Groce said. "Not only to have played, but to be a real friend to somebody like that." Rodney's former A&M coach R.C. Slocum added,"In his short 41 years, he made a tremendous impact. He touched so many lives and he touched them in a positive way so he might have gotten his work done."
