TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Bre'Shauna Washington, a 12-year-old East Texas honor student, has passed away after a second bout with cancer.

Two years ago, Bre'Shauna was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma. After missing most of her fifth grade year and undergoing rounds of intense chemotherapy, it seemed she was well on her way to being cancer-free, but doctors found another mass in March.

When the family got the news that the second tumor had developed in Bre'Shauna's chest cavity, she decided she wanted to fight it at home.

"I knew I needed to get back to school and that I needed to get out of the hospital if I wanted to move on to the seventh grade," she said.

The chemotherapy treatment at home seemed to be working, her mother told us.

Even with chemotherapy and recovery to contend with, Bre'Shauna kept her faith and even managed to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society in May at Boulter Middle School. Doctors were hopeful when a March 28 x-ray showed the tumor had shrunk considerably.

At the time, Bre'Shauna's mother, TyRhonda Sherfield, said, "The most important thing is she has her faith and that's what's keeping her going through all of this," Sherfield said.

The school held an event to encourage and support Bre'Shauna, called Taking A Walk in Her Shoes, on May 9. Bre'Shauna was surprised and encouraged by the event, telling us, "Today is a celebration of me, I guess, and it feels great!"

Sadly, Bre'Shauna passed away this week.

In the words of her principal, Rodney Curry, “Bre’Shauna has had such an impact on her fellow students and the staff here at Boulter. We all realize that what we complain about is nothing compared to what others are going through. Seeing her faith has increased our faith.”
