LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -
Sources say authorities are investigating a Thursday afternoon house fire in Longview as arson.
Authorities say the fire was reported around 4:34 p.m. When crews arrived at the home in the 1200 block of Chad Street they were able to contain the fire, which started in the living room. The rear of the home was heavily damaged in the blaze. The fire marshal says the fire was started inside the home while the resident, a renter, was gone. Evidence of ignitable fluid was also found at the fire
"There was a smell of gasoline at the structure, a smell of an accelerant was noticed at the scene," Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary said.
However, investigators say there is no sign of a break in.
Police detained a man they are calling a "person of interest" on Thursday afternoon. The man was near the home when crews responded. However, Zackary said the man was later released and has been ruled out as a suspect.
No one was injured in the fire. Investigators estimate the damage around $50,000. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. The woman renting the house, who said she didn't have insurance, is being helped by family.
