(WMC)- A mom is standing tall for her child after finding a grown man from church was hiding in her teenage daughter's closet.

According to police, Shelby Adams, 46, established a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old girl, whose identity has been hidden.

The family attends a small church in Gallaway, Tennessee and police say that is where Adams met the victim.

"It was unreal, really," said the mother, who asked WMC Action News 5 to hide her identity. "Sick to my stomach. Can't even begin to describe how I feel."

According to the affidavit, Adams met the girl at church and asked for her phone number. He bought her jewelry for Christmas and then started driving by her house.

"Why would you do this to my daughter, manipulate her mind? She's only 17," said the mother. "And you have a 15-year-old and a 20-something-year-old daughter. You knew better."

Police say Adams even drove the girl to the doctor and to the pharmacist to get treatment for a sexually transmitted disease.

"He's a sick old man. Sick old man," added the mother.

The mother did not know about the ordeal for months; not until she found Adams in her daughter's closet at 1 a.m.

"She's not herself anymore. And I'm trying to get counseling for her to help her overcome this," noted the mother. "She's just a baby. Seventeen. Still in high school. And it hurts that he did that because he messed with her mind and she's never gonna be the same. Never."

Adams' bond was set at $20,000, and he is due back in court next Wednesday.
